Perceived parental monitoring and school motivation during adolescence: a bidirectional model

School motivation is key to promoting optimal educational pathways. Some studies suggest that parental monitoring behaviors foster school among adolescents; however, they did not examine the potential role of adolescents’ in shaping behaviors. This longitudinal study aimed bidirectional associations between three types (autonomous, controlled, and amotivation) two perceived (solicitation control). The sample consisted 328 adolescents (212 girls, 116 boys; M = 15.78 years), assessed at end their third or fourth year secondary school, again, 1 later. Path analyses revealed over a 1-year period, were found autonomous solicitation. Moreover, solicitation as by was associated with decrease amotivation during following year. Findings provide support for dynamic nature parent–child relationships highlight need consider child-to-parent effects promote positive school-related outcomes.
